Sylvia Simpson Caldwell, age 97, passed away peacefully at home on December 31, 2025.
Born and raised in Rochester, New York, Sylvia moved to New Jersey in 1953 after marrying William R. Caldwell. They made their home in Glen Ridge, where they raised their four children. Although their marriage did not last more than 20 years, they remained close friends until William’s passing in 2023.
Sylvia is survived by her children Nancy Caldwell, John Caldwell, David Caldwell, and William Caldwell; her grandchildren Chelsea Roth and Margaux Caldwell; and her great-grandchildren, Harper and Summer Roth.
Sylvia spent many years working in the admitting department at Mountainside Hospital and continued her dedication there as a volunteer for decades. She was an active and devoted member of her church for many years.
A dedicated mother and grandmother, Sylvia’s greatest joy was her family. For 50 years, they vacationed together on Nantucket, her favorite place in the world. She had a wonderful sense of humor and a lifelong penchant for tomfoolery, a gift she passed on generously to those around her.
Sylvia loved chocolate, The Bee Gees, little vases of flowers, and especially, her grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 28 at 12 noon at the Glen Ridge Congregational Church. https://www.glenridgecong.org/
