For Susie
Sweet Guadalupe,
Dark Mother of sun-drenched lands,
You open your arms to welcome
Your daughter Susie
Who comes to you in radiance and joy.
How light she is
Secure in your embrace,
Beyond fear and pain,
Enveloped in the glowing warmth
Of your love.
Now her eyes are open and clear
And her body sways again
With the grace of the swaying palm.
For Susie
