Elizabeth Griffith

Elizabeth “Betty” Griffith passed away on Friday, July 21st, 2017 at age 82. She was a lifelong resident of Elizabeth, New Jersey, born on May 19th, 1935, the third oldest of six children of Ann and Earle Griffith. She attended Battin High School. In the 1960s, she was a catcher for the Linden Arians softball team.

Betty never married but was an involved aunt with a total of 19 nieces and nephews. She also took care of her father Earle, who lived with her in his later years. Always available for babysitting her nieces and nephews when they were young children, she also took them to the movies and Yankee games. In addition to being a Yankee fan, Betty was a movie buff. She told the story of meeting Paul Newman at a Newark Airport bookstore where she worked as a young woman. For most of her working life, she was a driver for LabCorp, transporting medical samples from doctors' offices to labs.

Of her siblings, Betty is survived by her brother Richard Griffith of Elizabeth and predeceased by Gloria Leon, William Griffith, Robert Griffith, and Mary MacBride.

She had a ready laugh, and will be missed.

There will be a graveside interment service at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Newark, New Jersey at a future date, followed by a luncheon.
