Salvatore "Andy" McGuire

Salvatore “Andy” McGuire, 59, passed away after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease on March 19, 2018. He was born and raised until his teenage years in Orange, NJ, where he often spent time chatting with neighbors, attending ball games, and taking walks with his dad. He never forgot, and often joyfully reminisced about the people and places he knew there, and had a special affection for the firefighters from the firehouse on the corners of Lincoln and Central Avenues.

Andy lived most of his adult years in state developmental centers. Due to the downsizing and elimination of these institutions by various governors of the state, he was forced to relocate from the institution in New Lisbon, to Bordentown, to Totowa and once again back to New Lisbon. He proved himself to have an extraordinary ability to remain upbeat and loving throughout these moves, always hopeful that he would one day move to a group home.

Andy was an active participant in the Special Olympics, where he excelled at softball, and once placed first in the state cross country skiing competition. He acted as a “client advocate” in some of the institutions in which he resided, speaking up for improvements in the system for himself and fellow residents.

He dearly loved his family and took great pride in being an uncle and great uncle to his numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to these, he leaves behind many aunts, uncles, and cousins, his sisters, Josephine Gardiner of Basking Ridge, and Teresa Morrissey and her husband James of Ocean Township, NJ, and a brother, Thomas McGuire and his wife, Barbara of Las Vegas, Nevada. He was predeceased by his parents, Rose and Tom McGuire and the love of his life, Myra.

Family and friends are invited to attend his Funeral Mass to be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, March 24, 2018 at St. Catharine's Church in Spring Lake, NJ. If you are unable to attend, the mass can be viewed via live stream at www.stcatharine-stmargaret.org

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
